Worm on a Twig

A while back I saw a movie titled Planes, Trains and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin. In one of the scenes, John Candy (Del) responded to Steve Martin (Neal), “You just go with the flow … Like a twig on the shoulders of a mighty stream.” That stuck with me and although I was referring to the line, I was misquoting it. I would say, “like a twig in the arms of a mighty river” which later on I would use to describe a surrendered life to God. I’m just a twig (branch) in the arms of a mighty river (river of life, the Vine). Resting and abiding in Him, trusting in Him and praying only for His will to be done in my life. God is in control of everything. A twig in the arms of a mighty river have no control of the direction it will go. It’s completely dependent on the stream.

As I was reading the book of Isaiah, in Isaiah 41:14 -“Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob, little Israel, do not fear, for I myself will help you,’ declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” (https://www.gotquestions.org/worm-Jacob.html)

Worm in this context is in reference to Jacob (Israel).

It’s a wonderful promise combined with an unflattering mode of address. Jacob (that is, the people of Israel) is called a worm. Worms are small, and worms are lowly. That is the most obvious connection drawn in Isaiah 41:14 between Israel and the worm. In and of themselves, the children of Israel had no power or glory. They would be trampled by the other nations as easily as people would trample a worm. But God promises deliverance to His people, protection from their enemies, and triumph in the end. “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (verse 10). Israel’s enemies will be vanquished: “All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish” (verse 11). Though they are a mere worm, a symbol of insignificance, the Lord God Almighty is on their side. (https://www.gotquestions.org/worm-Jacob.html)

Not only am I a lowly worm, my heart is also deceitful and desperately wicked.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (KJV). While the immediate context speaks of the nation of Judah, that nation illustrates the human condition that is true everywhere and for everyone. This is a concept that theologians have called “total depravity.” (https://www.gotquestions.org/heart-desperately-wicked.html)

Apostle Paul in Romans 7:14-25 said this:

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature[b] a slave to the law of sin. (NIV)

So this Worm on A Twig saved by Grace by the mercy of Jesus Christ who died on the cross for my sin delights in these passage, Galatians 2:20 –

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (NIV)
